Are you a teacher? Do you want to know how you can make money online?
About making money online
Again, like I mentioned in my post on Writing jobs, why I don’t like writing about making money online is these days you get so many scams telling people how they can make money quick and easy and it’s all lies, which make people distrust us who are honest as well.
Working online is as much a job as working in a job, the only difference is you do it from home and you need a lot of self discipline and commitment because there is no-one to check up on you to see if you’re working or not.
You have your deadlines to meet if you’re a writer, transcriber, or any type of Freelancer but it’s up to you whether you’re going to do it or not.
What I want you to understand before you even read this post further is making money online is not easy and you have a lot of competition in whatever you choose to do. There are also so many ways of making money online that what works for one person might or will now work for another person.
It takes time too. For some longer than for others. You need to build up your reputation. You need to build up your following over time and you need to, through all that time, sometimes invest in your business (time and money) without receiving much back yet.
Basically what’s happening is you’re starting your own business and like with any physical business, you have to invest, work harder than everybody else, be committed and believe in yourself as well as your business. In business you have to be able to learn fast, fail fast, get up fast & move on to the next thing fast. How you can make money online by teaching
Let’s get back to the topic of how you can make money online by teaching. If you read the part above, and you’re still here, chances are you’re the right person for the job.
If you’re good at teaching, a teacher who wants to earn some extra income or someone who has something to teach people that you know the subject inside out and want to help other people understand or teach kids, this article is for you.
Let’s look at the first option of how you can teach people:
1) How you can make money online by teaching: Online courses
Online courses are huge right now. Everybody is creating courses in anything you can think of, from
- how to do woodworking,
- how to sing,
- how to build a cabinet
- how to play a musical instrument
- I can bet if you can think of something – there is a course on it already.
Before you start thinking about selling your online course
Do you homework.
Search for courses in the same niche (category) you would like to create a course in.
See what’s available and if you can, see how they are presented.
Doing a course as suggested later on in this post is always a great idea. Things you learn = nobody can take away from you.
What will the name of your School be?
Look at the platforms I give you below.
Take a look at some of the courses that are presented there.
Look at the names of the schools.
Some people name their school after their own names and some people name it after their primary course (like mine is named after my flagship course which is PLR Master Course).
Don’t just jump in – do your research, think deep about what you want to do and maybe even sleep over it before you sign up and start creating.
Where do you sell your online courses?
There might be more options, but I’m going to look at the top three where you can sell your course/s.
First of all, let’s just get this out of the way, the link to Teachable is an affiliate link, but whether you go through the link or search for Teachable in your browser, I don’t mind. If you do use the link and someday I do receive a small commission, you will hear my voice singing in your head “Thanks for supporting me, you’re so freakin awesome.” So with that out of the way, let’s move on to the important stuff.
My course PLR Master Course is hosted on Teachable. You can click through just to see what a course looks like from the customer point of view.
I’ll bet you’ll love teachable but I also know what you want to know right now.
How much is it going to cost?
Here is the pricing for the different packages, but……
You can go for the free option until you start making money with your courses and then maybe choose to upgrade as you go. The choice is yours.
What is great about using Teachable as your online school is that you own the school. You own the content. You own the income. You choose your price.
When you use the free option they do take a small percentage of your sales and you only receive your payments once a month, but that’s fine.
You don’t have to pay for the hosting of your videos. No website hosting or domain name either.
If you do decide to go for the paid options, you can link your own domain name to your course and thus make it more personalized and even more your own.
I love Teachable and that’s why I recommend them to you.
Now, let’s take a look at another option:
If you click on the link it will take you to the pricing page, it is too large for me to get into a screenshot but you can also start for free like on Teachable.
By the way, in case you were wondering the Thinkific link – not an affiliate link 😉
I can honestly tell you that I have not yet created a course on Thinkific because I did a course with David Siteman Garland and Pat Flynn in which Pat recommended Teachable (he’s a partner with them) and that was just the way I went. It does not mean you have to, that’s why I’m giving you the different platforms so that you can make the decision yourself.
Also when I did check out Thinkific they did not receive payments through PayPal yet and that did affect my choice.
And the fact that I don’t have a course on there yet, does not mean that I’ll never have one on Thinkific.
And the next one is…..
Again, according to law, I’m supposed to let you know that the link to Udemy is an affiliate link but once again, you can search for Udemy in your browser or use the link provided – I don’t care, it’s up to you. But again, if you do buy a course some day and I’m still the one who will receive the $5 for you doing so – “Thanks, you’re so freakin awesome!!”
By the way, with affiliate links you don’t pay anything more than you would have if you didn’t buy though the link – so it doesn’t really matter in any case, does it? 😉
So with that out of the way again, let’s move on to the important stuff.
I have not sold one course on Udemy yet, I’ve only bought courses on Udemy.
What I can tell you too is Udemy is super popular and I think the place most people started out with their first course.
But if you look at this post of Lisa Irby on Udemy, you will see that the fact that they have so many discounts on their courses, basically giving them away for free (I mean what is $10 for a massive course?). That means you as the course creator does not stand a chance of making back the time, effort and most probably money you put into creating your course.
Where do you go if you want to create a course on Udemy?
You will see on your right hand there’s a tab “Become an instructor.”
Click on “Learn more” and you will go through to the page that tells you how everything works.
What I do know too is that I learned in Wealthy Affiliate (affiliate link 🙄 ) that they reject your course if they are not happy with the video, audio or format of your course.
So in the end, I love buying courses on Udemy, but I’m not sure I’ll sell there – but remember the choice is yours.
Take a look at how many people they are promoting your course to. Maybe it might be worth starting out, learning from and then building out from there.
I’m not going into self hosting for your courses in this article because especially if you’re just starting out and have to learn about creating your course, getting some equipment, learning some programs, working on the curriculum (modules) of your course, etc. – why would you want to worry about buying hosting, paying for your course software (like Course Cats which I think is meawsome), paying for hosting the videos on Wistia and so on.
These are options that will cost you more but definitely something to keep in mind for the future or if you have money to invest now – It’s the top of the notch business choice.
If you just want basic, easy to go with and know nothing about domain names and hosting and all that stuff yet, then rather just keep it simple and stay with the three mentioned above.
What do you need
What do you need to sell your course?
You might think that you have to go out and buy thousands of dollars worth of equipment now to start creating your course, but that is not necessary.
Feel free to buy the Home Studio on a budget course from my Teachable courses to learn more, but let’s look at a few simple things.
FYI: I’m not presenting that course, but it does have great info.
A good microphone
Why do I start with a microphone?
I have teenagers who are constantly on YouTube watching who knows what. They tell me all the time that no matter how great the story is that they wanted to watch on YouTube, if the sound is awful, they don’t watch it any further.
According to that, I can tell you that your sound is the most important part of your online course.
If you consider the fact that Udemy rejects courses with bad audio, this also tells you that great audio is super important.
For instance there is this ZaxSound microphone which is super cheap in comparison to the Blue Yeti. You can buy 7 or 8 of them for the same price as one Blue Yeti.
But remember when you do look at microphones, be sure to check out the Customer Reviews at the bottom of the page. Search for bad reviews as well, but keep an open mind – sometimes people are just negative for no reason at all.
It took me THREE days to decide which microphone I was going to buy and in the end went for the Blue Yeti because I thought that sometimes going for the cheapest is not always the best choice.
I love my Blue Yeti and actually have the blue one, but have not tried the cheaper options out there, which looks good too, just remember to do thorough research.
This can depend on whether you’re using a PC or a Mac but PowerPoint is a great option to go for if you want to create slides or even do screen recordings.
For Mac, you would use Keynote, but apparently you can use PowerPoint too according to this post by Microsoft: Create a PowerPoint for Mac presentation from a Word for Mac outline.
Don’t have money for presentation software? Go for Open Office. It’s free and it’s awesome. You can learn more in this article on how to create presentations easily in OpenOffice.
Video software I love to use is the AVS4YOU video editor. (Affiliate link 🙄 but you don’t have to click on it, you can just search for it 😆 ) They have lots of extra free software you can download too and I use the audio converter and document converter a lot as well.
If you buy AVS4YOU now, you can use the code “AVSAutumn17” to get a $10 discount until 30.11.2017.
You can also use it to do screen recordings, record your voice and do transitions and a lot of cool, amazing stuff.
Just some bonus info:
I get my intro videos from Pixabay which you can use for commercial use with no attribution required.
Click on the tab video under the search block and I usually type in the search “intro” or “intro video.”
Add it in front of my video with AVS4YOU and I think it looks cool.
Hope you agree, like this one:
It was created with PowerPoint and AVS4YOU
If you want to record yourself in the video, I would say a good Webcam or Video camera would also be a great idea.
Make sure that you can use your microphone with it as well to have great sound.
But these days even the iPhones does amazing recordings, so if you already have one, I’m sure you can use it.
Just remember although many people will say as long as you start somewhere, do keep in mind that you don’t want to lose people even before you start out because of poor audio or video quality.
It’s like we used to say in our take away business, if I won’t eat it – I won’t sell it. Have that same attitude with your course – if you won’t pay for it, don’t expect someone else to.
Learn more through courses
Home studio on a budget expands more into other areas for creating a studio at home, but if you have the above, you’re off to a good start.
You can also do the How to create your own successful online course now at Udemy (affiliate link )
Or even take a look at Create and sell online courses with Teachable and Thinkific , also on Udemy (and therefore also an affiliate link 🙄 )
Not a video course type of person? Here is another option for you
How you can make money online by teaching on Teachers pay Teachers
If you are rather someone who would teach through books and materials, here is another option for you.
You can create your book with all your pictures and whatever you think would be great material to place inside the book according to what it is you teach and for which grade.
You can create your book with Microsoft Word or Open Office and export it as PDF.
Then you go to Teachers Pay Teachers where you upload it to sell it.
Things to remember:
Your first upload must be a free product, so make sure that you are not only creating that big book of information that you want to sell, but create something (of value of course) that you’re able to give away for free.
Be sure to read through all the information they have for you on Teachers Pay Teachers to be certain you comply with everything.
Also remember all the other teachers also had to upload their first product to give away for free so you’ll be able to find a lot of free products there that will be similar to the subjects you are interested in creating your products for.
Download them and work through their material to see the quality and see what type of work is expected of you to create for your free product.
Again, do your homework. Do your research. Don’t just jump in.
Even if you take a week from now to wait for the perfect idea to come to mind and to research and work through your idea, that’s fine. Don’t rush into things. But don’t wait forever either.
You can also find a lot of questions answered in the Sellers help section on TpT.
Promoting and selling
Now never think when you’re working online the fact that you have an amazing course or an awesome book to sell that you’re going to sell it from day one just after you uploaded it.
It might take days, weeks, months or even years depending on your selling and promoting skills.
For every 100 or 500 people that see your course or book, one might buy.
Am I being negative now? No, I’m being realistic and don’t want to give you false hope. But I don’t want you to give up too soon either.
I want you to realize that this takes time, effort and determination and if you don’t have those, sorry, this is not for you.
The complete digital marketing course is a great course, again on Udemy (so again affiliate link ) to take to learn more about marketing yourself in this digital world.

Sorry for all the affiliate jokes in between
They’re going on and on about clearly stating exactly which products we are an affiliate off – it’s quite annoying, right?
But from here on onward, I’ll just be making a mark like this: (aff). Except if I feel like joking around about it again.
On my side, I didn’t see what the reason was because it would not change what I say, whether I get paid to say it or not and whether you use my link or go search for it on your own – doesn’t matter to me much. But it turns out that some people just promote stuff because they get paid for doing so even if it’s a bunch of BS. So to keep to the guidelines and keep everything legit here on Success Online Site, I’ll tell you exactly which links are affiliate links, then we know we’re all open and honest about everything. Okay? Sharp, sharp!! 😉
